India Blog 8 – Kolkata!

Wow how fast time has gone by!  Without even noticing I finished an entire tour in Kolkata without doing a single blog update!  You might be asking yourself, “Where did Blog 7 go??”. well the answer is simply that I sent out an email update called “blog 7” with the last minute finale thoughts on Varanasi.  This blog includes that and MORE so I wanted to call it blog 8… in reality it is Blog 7.6 So here is a quick recap of what I’ve been up to with Performers Without Borders:

We finished up our tour in Varanasi and it was heartwarming to see our students perform magnificently in a wonderful public show!  Everyone ROCKED the stage and my fire staff group had the honor of closing out the show!

When I got to Kolkata I immediately went to work editing an “official” recap video for our tour in Varanasi.  I had a TON of fun filming all the footage, recording all the background music live, and editing it into a fun story!

Kolkata is an extremely busy city and we worked there with dozens of organizations over three weeks.  It was difficult getting around because everything was so spread out, but we took public busses, trams, taxies, rickshaws, and did A LOT of walking.  It was all worth it when we got to the kids though!

Mango introduced me to this amazing local guy named Pablo who showed us around town when we had the chance and helped us navigate the city!  IMG_9205

He even came by with his friend Shreya Goswami who is an AMAZING photographer to capture some great shots of our public street shows for the Chetla and Tollygunge communities!  Here are some of my favorite pics from her:

Thank you SO MUCH Shreya and Puablo!

We ended our project in Kolkata on Holi, otherwise known as the Festival of Color!  Everyone in the streets takes handfulls of powdered dies and either throws it at you, smears some on your face, or mixes it with water and squirts it on you.

We decided to go visit the Asirbad Boys Home which we had worked in several times and was really close to our apartment.  The teenage boys were in the streets and spotted us coming several blocks away… we didn’t have a chance

Now I am on vacation in Kathmandu, Nepal!  We have a week off before meeting back up in Darjeeling to finish our tour with another month of workshops and performances!
Kathmandu is AMAZING so far!  I’ve only been here 2 days, but everyone I’ve met is extremely nice and the city is beautiful.  It is so refreshing to be out of the modern city of Kolkata and in an area surrounded by tradition and filled with ancient architecture!

I plan on editing a short recap video of all the work we did in Kolkata, but for now I’m going to enjoy my time off and leave you with a simple greeting from Nepal!
Namaste!
